Every kid wants to be a superhero at some point, and a cape sells the whole costume instantly — even over regular clothes in a pinch. This version needs zero sewing and comes together fast enough to make the morning of Halloween if you’re behind schedule.
What You’ll Need
- 1 yard of felt or satin fabric (felt is easier for beginners, satin looks more “official”)
- Fabric scissors
- Velcro strips or 2 pieces of ribbon
- Hot glue gun
- Optional: fabric paint or iron-on letter for a logo
Instructions
1. Cut the cape shape. Fold your fabric in half lengthwise. Cut a rounded curve at the top for the neckline, and taper the bottom corners slightly so it’s not a plain rectangle — a slight point at the bottom makes it read as “cape” rather than “blanket.”
2. Attach the neck closure. Hot glue a strip of velcro (soft side on one end, rough side on the other) to each side of the neckline, or glue on two ribbon ties instead if you want an adjustable, more classic look.
3. Add the logo (optional but worth it). This is the step that makes it feel custom. Cut a simple shape from contrasting felt — a lightning bolt, star, or your kid’s initial — and hot glue it to the back center of the cape. Iron-on letters work too if you want it faster.
4. Clean up the edges. If you used felt, you’re done — it doesn’t fray, so raw edges are fine. If you used satin or another fraying fabric, run a thin line of hot glue along the cut edges, or use fabric glue for a cleaner finish, to stop it unraveling before the big night.
5. Try it on and adjust. Check the length — capes that drag on the ground are a trip hazard for younger kids. Trim the bottom if needed.
Tips
- Color = character: red reads as generic superhero, black leans “villain” or “batman-style,” blue/silver leans “ice/space hero” — pick based on what they’re already going as
- No hot glue gun? Fabric tape or even strong double-sided tape works for a one-night costume that doesn’t need to survive repeat wear
- Make it reversible: cut two different colored capes and glue them back-to-back for a two-in-one costume
