These make a walkway genuinely magical after dark, and they cost almost nothing to put together if you already have jars on hand.
You’ll need: clean, dry mason jars, black tissue paper or cardstock, Mod Podge or craft glue, battery-operated tea lights
1. Cut Your Silhouettes
Cut simple silhouettes — bats, cats, or a jack-o’-lantern face — out of black tissue paper or cardstock.
2. Adhere to the Jar
Adhere them to the outside of the jar with Mod Podge or a thin layer of craft glue, brushing a second coat over the top to seal.
3. Add the Light
Once dry, drop in a battery-operated tea light (never a real flame near paper). The silhouette will cast a sharp shadow through the glass while the surrounding glow comes through in warm amber light.
4. Arrange Them
Line them along a front walkway spaced two to three feet apart, or cluster three different heights together on a porch step for a more layered look. Because they’re battery-powered, they’re safe to leave out overnight and simply switch off in the morning.
Tip
A batch of six to eight jars is usually enough to visibly light a short walkway without looking sparse.
