Instructions
1. Pick your silhouette shapes. Classic options: a witch stirring a cauldron, a cat arching its back, a row of bats, a skeleton hand reaching up. Search “Halloween silhouette template” if you want to print and trace rather than draw freehand — simple bold shapes work best, since fine detail gets lost once it’s backlit.
2. Cut it out. Trace your design onto the black paper and cut carefully. For cleaner curves and tight corners, a craft knife on a cutting mat gives sharper results than scissors, but scissors work fine for simpler shapes.
3. Position on the window. Tape the cutout directly onto the inside of the window glass. Face it toward the street/outside so the silhouette reads correctly to passersby.
4. Light it from behind. Place a lamp or string lights on a table behind the silhouette, angled so light shines through the window past the cutout. The contrast between the dark shape and the lit window is what sells the effect.
5. Test it at night before committing. Walk outside once it’s dark and view it from the street — adjust the light’s position or distance until the silhouette reads clearly rather than washing out or being too faint.
